Road to Recovery

Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability in childhood and can lead to substantial family stress and burden. Road to Recovery was designed to provide education, support, and skills training for parents and caregivers of children with traumatic brain injury directly following their injury. Road to Recovery directly addresses the need for resources to support families while adapting to this “new normal.” This online program was designed to be highly usable and responsive to identified parent and caregiver needs.

Key Features of the Road to Recovery

Responsive Design

To provide maximum functionality, Road to Recovery was designed to be usable on any device, regardless of form factor or operating system.

Highly Relevant Content

Our design team constantly gathered input from actual parents to provide educational and support materials that directly address the challenges parents face after their child’s injury.

Engaging Learning Materials

Online learning materials were made to be engaging by creating highly interactive learning experiences that required active participation, as well as through content that was directly connected to challenges parents face after TBI.

Multi-phase Design

Road to Recovery was designed and developed using an iterative, three-phase process. We incorporated parent and caregiver input at every stage of development to create a learning experience that was sensitive to their needs during a particularly challenging phase of parenting.

HUMAN-CENTERED

Human-centered educational technology design means that the learner must be considered in all aspects of learning design. This includes (1) the technological, which is how the learner uses the system; (2) the pedagogical, which has to do with understandable instructions and learning materials; and (3) the sociocultural, which has to do with how learners' backgrounds and cultures influence how they learn.

I have significant experience developing virtual reality software systems, designing virtual reality learning experiences, and deploying virtual reality hardware.
Learning Analytics & Artificial Intelligence
My work in extracting analytics data from software systems, visualizing data, and deriving insights drives many key performance indicators for the systems I design. I also apply machine learning and artificial intelligence methods to understand learners' usage patterns.
Biometrics
I have been using biometrics to better understand how learners' usage of educational technologies can be understood through physiological responses. For example, I have been using eye tracking in my research since 2008 to better understand how gaze behavior predicts usage patterns.
